“The ZEB heat battery boiler from tepeo is a cleaner, smarter alternative to a traditional fossil fuel boiler.
Powered by electricity, it stores energy as heat and releases it into a wet central-heating system on demand. It delivers the same comfort and functionality as a traditional boiler, but with zero emissions at the point of use,” explains Paul Vine, Director of Barton Knight Energy.
Barton Knight Energy is part of the Barton Knight Group, which includes Barton Knight Electrical, and Barton Knight Contracting. The Energy division specialises in installing clean and renewable energy products for homes and businesses across the South East, including the tepeo ZEB.
“We had an aspiration to try to limit our carbon cost; and after having solar and battery energy storage (BESS) fitted at home, it seemed like the logical next step. Our solar was giving us good returns. Rather than exporting all the power we were generating, it made sense to use it to warm our home. Our bungalow was accepted as part of a NeatHeat trial run by UK Power Networks (UKPN), OVO Energy and clean tech company tepeo. The trial was to review how the ZEB works with the UK’s electricity network to power low-carbon heating.”
“The ZEB acts like a battery. It uses electricity to supply heating, then charges up and stores most of the heat a home requires at off-peak times – to be used on demand later. We switched to overnight cheaper energy tariffs to charge the ZEB. Now, in the winter months, when our solar panel system alone can’t power it, this is how it charges, and at a very low cost.”
John Shevlin, tepeo Business Manager, comments: “The ZEB intelligently stores the right amount of heat based on your needs, the weather and your tariff. It charges up when electricity is at its cheapest and tops up during the day if needed, so you’ll never run out of heat.”
John adds; “ZEBs are already being installed across England and Jersey, with trials underway. We’re looking to expand even further. There’s nothing currently on the market that really does what the ZEB heat battery does. Unlike electric boilers, the ZEB decouples heat generation from electricity demand, helping reduce pressure on the grid at peak times. The ZEB enables cheaper, greener heating when paired with smart, off-peak tariffs. This is ideal for the residential retrofit market whilst supporting a more resilient, renewable-powered energy system.”
