Commercial energy-efficient heating

We offer businesses and organisations a variety of low-carbon, energy-efficient solutions to heat (and cool) their buildings. These systems are ideal for social housing, schools, offices, shops, hotels, leisure/sports centres, factories and warehouses, helping save money and reduce carbon emissions. Smart, scalable options can provide a steady, comfortable temperature throughout the year. They can also integrate with other renewable energy sources (eg solar panels).

The two main options we offer for commercial properties are Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) and smart underfloor heating.

Commercial Heat Pumps are an energy-efficient alternative to traditional oil, gas, LPG (‘liquid gas’), and electric heating systems. Air Source Heat Pumps extract heat from the outside air. For every 1kWh of electricity commercial heat pumps can produce up to 3kWh of heat, making them three times more efficient than a standard gas boiler.

Commercial heat pumps can provide reliable heating and hot water all year round, and – properly maintained – will last for 20-25 years. There are a variety of options available, including ductless, ducted and multi-zoned systems, but the right system depends on your property and requirements. So ensure you choose an experienced, qualified installer that can offer advice and guidance.

Smart underfloor heating can be fitted in homes and commercial properties. The systems we use are flexible and easy to install – retrofit/fit-out or new build – without changing how spaces look or function.

There are no radiators or big units to fit and the slim, lightweight panels will fit underneath almost any any type of flooring: tiles, wood, carpet or vinyl. The system is designed to be modular for zoned heating and is suitable for new build, refurb/fit-out or retrofit. The panels heat up to 25% faster than traditional systems and

The underfloor heating system is safe and low-voltage, operating at just 48V DC. It works with renewable energy sources and smart controls, but can also controlled by a standard thermostat, heating up 25% faster than traditional systems. Our smart underfloor heating is another highly efficient, long-lasting and low-maintenance option for organisations.

We will assess your property, energy usage and your carbon emission goals, and recommend the best solution and tariff that meets your requirements. We will also advise whether any Government grants or 0% VAT will apply.

Commercial Battery Energy Storage (BESS)

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) store excess power from renewable energy sources (eg solar PV panels) or cheap off-peak electricity for later use.

Commercial battery storage units are usually fitted with power management systems that are set to charge at certain times or when surplus energy is generated. These systems are designed to be integrated with (and maximise) renewables and existing supplies. Battery storage gives businesses much more control over their energy usage and management.

You can use commercial battery storage to save money in a number of ways:

  • Reduce bills and operational costs by ‘peak shaving‘. This means charging during cheaper off-peak hours when tariffs are low, then discharging electricity when prices are highest.
  • Reduce energydemand charges‘, i.e. the fees charged by many commercial tariffs during high usage periods.
  • Manage your energy more effectively by ‘load shifting‘; spreading the electricity used for high-power activities (e.g. machinery) throughout the day
  • Protect against wholesale energy price rises and market volatility with a more secure supply. This can also provide back-up support and resilience during power outages.
  • Manage long-term financial planning better as energy usage is more predictable.
  • Generate new revenue and be paid to reduce or increase energy use via Demand-Side Response (DSR) schemes, or by selling stored electricity back to the grid.

Commercial battery storage systems are connected to the National Grid but operate independently. They’re an ideal solution to provide extra capacity, resilience, and back-up power in the event of outages, securing your future supply in a volatile energy market.

We can help your organisation choose the right system for your requirements, whether that’s large-scale industrial or smaller systems for SMEs. Our expert team can help at every step, including planning permissions, grid connection applications, installation and maintenance.

Commercial solar Photo-Voltaic (PV) panels

Solar PV panels for commercial buildings can help businesses and organisations reduce fuel and energy bills, cut carbon emissions and make a significant step towards sustainability and Net Zero targets.

A tried-and-tested, reliable renewable energy solution, solar panels for commercial use can be paired with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to store energy (or cheaper off-peak rate electricity generated by the grid) to use on demand later. This allows organisations to secure their future energy supply, protecting them against price fluctuations in the energy market and reducing their reliance on the grid, with back-up power in the event of any outages.

We offer free assessments to help you choose the best solar panel system for your requirements and will guide you through planning permission, funding options, and G99 commercial grid connection applications.

With 20+ years of experience in the energy sector, our expert management team can also offer professional advice and guidance on carbon reduction strategies to meet Net Zero, including energy procurement and more.

We work with Local Authorities and Housing Associations on solar panel installation, maintenance and refurbishment programmes for social housing and public buildings, as well as offering solutions to factories, warehouses/distribution centres, office and retail spaces, SMEs and more.

Renewable energy and energy efficiency strategies

We help organisations turn energy data, compliance requirements and sustainability targets into funded, deliverable projects.

Net Zero is not only a compliance requirement, it is an engine for growth. The UK has committed to net zero by 2050 under the UK Climate Change Act 2008 and regulation is tightening quickly.

Businesses face increasing pressure from ESOS, SECR , MEES, investor expectations and industry net zero commitments.

Organisations with emission reduction strategies reduce costs, secure funding, increase resilience and become preferred suppliers.

Barton Knight has teamed up with sustainability experts Eqonic Sustainability to support clients from commercial sectors, Local Authorities, Multi-Academy Trusts and housing associations. We deliver end-to-end energy and sustainability strategies by offering:

    • Renewable energy strategy adviceSolar PV, heat pumps and battery storage
    • Energy efficiency advice– Insulation, circular economy and resource efficiency
    • Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reporting– Scopes 1-3, aligned with GHG Protocol
    • Sustainability and ESG reporting– Including Climate Action Plans for schools
    • Sustainable funding opportunities– Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), green bonds, carbon credits

Our approach ensures your organisation not only understands its carbon footprint, but has a clear, commercially viable plan to reduce it.

G98/G99/G100 infrastructure application services

We help homeowners and commercial organisations apply to and notify local energy distribution networks (District Network Operators or DNOs) for the connection of solar panels or other renewable energy sources to the National Grid.

For small-scale microgeneration systems, e.g. most domestic solar PV systems up to 16amps or 3.68kW per phase, a ‘connect and notify’ process is required, as per the Engineering Recommendation standard (EREC) G98. The DNO must be notified within 28 days of installation.

For larger generation schemes i.e. with an output greater than 3.68kW, a more complex G99 application for DNO approval is required, with site plans etc. Depending on the specification, approval can take between 10-45 working days.

DNO notification and approval ensures that local networks can safely accommodate the additional power. Our experienced team can assist with both G98 notifications and G99 applications to ensure your project progresses as planned- contact hello@bartonknightenergy.co.uk to find out more.
