Domestic battery energy storage

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) allow homeowners to store electricity and use it when required. This means you can charge the batteries with electricity from the grid at off-peak times (using cheaper rates!). And then use (or ‘discharge’) that electricity during peak hours – saving energy and money.

You can also store excess electricity generated by renewable technologies such as solar panels. So when the sun goes down you can still power your home with clean energy. This technology can be be integrated with electric heating too; using heat battery boilers that store electricity from the grid at off-peak rates, or surplus energy generated from solar panels.

The battery systems use smart features and can be programmed to switch automatically to the cheapest options. The technology is designed to integrate with existing electricity networks (homes and the National Grid). Installation can be done in a day or two. It’s essential to choose a professional, qualified electrician to install the system, handle any permits (eg DNO paperwork) and ensure it is safe and compliant with regulations.

Battery storage systems help homeowners reduce their bills, cut carbon emissions, and increase their energy security – providing backup power during black-outs or outages. They offer cheap, reliable electricity available day and night.

Residential EV charger installation

Our professional team of electrical engineers has several years of experience of installing EV charging points. We offer a comprehensive range of EV chargers from leading UK suppliers with different designs and charging speeds, so we can offer you the best option for your property, car, and lifestyle. Every EV charger installation we do comes with a 3-year warranty on equipment and labour.

It’s essential to use a registered, qualified electrician with specific experience in EV charger installations as a non-compliant installation can be dangerous, leading to potential overload/fire, voiding your car’s warranty and disqualifying you from government incentives.

OZEV grants for EV charger installations

As part of its Electric Vehicle Homecharge scheme, the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) provides £500 towards the cost. As an OZEV-authorised installer, Barton Knight can install, commission and service your electric car charging points and advise you on applying for the grant, and how to choose the best charging solution and energy suppliers and tariffs for your needs.

Energy-efficient home heating

Interested in low-carbon, energy-efficient heating? There are options to suit almost every home! We offer a free survey of your property and existing heating systems at your convenience. Our professional engineers can recommend the best products and set-up for your house and your lifestyle.

Many of these options can also be combined with solar panels. This reduces reliance on the grid, minimises carbon emissions and results in significantly lower energy costs.

Where appropriate, we can also recommend tariffs from energy companies which offer special rates for powering heat pumps to lower rates for household usage in specific ‘off-peak’ periods. Smart meters or controls are usually required to monitor usage.

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)

Installed outside your house, these discreet white or grey units capture heat efficiently from the air and transfer it into your home. Heat pumps are extremely energy efficient. They work like an outside boiler and can be integrated into existing heating systems. Occasionally some modifications may be necessary: for example, upgrading single panel radiators to double or triple panel options.

Low maintenance and long-lasting (20+ years), heat pump systems can produce heat at very low temperatures but are not suitable for every property. If your house is poorly insulated, or doesn’t have enough outdoor space we may recommend another option.

Heat Battery Boilers

We offer the ‘ZEB’ – an electric boiler and battery system from tepeo. The ZEB heat battery boiler can be a great option for properties that aren’t suitable for air source heat pumps. It acts like a battery, using electricity to supply heating, then charging up and storing most of the heat a home requires at off-peak times. This can be used on demand later.

The ZEB’s smart programming taps into and stores electricity from the grid at the cheapest off-peak rates, based on your needs, the weather and your tariff. If it uses up all the energy stored in the batteries – on a very cold winter’s day, for example – then it can charge itself by taking from the grid again.

You don’t need to worry about compromising on comfort or scrimping on heating in cold weather to cut fuel bills. The system is programmed in advance to use the most efficient options.

Domestic solar panels

Installing solar panels on your home can help you reduce your electricity bills, secure your future energy supply, and even earn money by selling surplus power back into the National Grid. Using clean, renewable energy you’ll cut your carbon footprint and improve the value of your property.

The right solar panels for your property, installed by a qualified engineer, can be paired with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to store surplus energy (from sunlight – or cheap off-peak electricity generated by the grid) to use when required. This offers even more savings and can help homeowners become more self-sufficient, and security against future energy price rises.
